Motivated Seller - here's your chance to have a 50 year old GREAT playing, GREAT looking vintage banjo! I have an official Elderly Music appraisal (http://www.elderly.com) that I can provide to serious buyers.Salstrom Artist model plectrum 4-string banjo has a 22-fret ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl diamond-shaped inlays, 27" scale length, made circa 1963-1964.
Serial number: none.
This banjo is cosmetically and structurally in excellent condition!
This instrument conforms to the typical specifications of the model for the period in which it was made with 11" diameter multi-ply maple rim, Whyte-Laydie Tubaphone style tone ring (Woodhaven Industries flathead [Gibson-style] tone rings were used after 1964), one-piece die-cast flange, 24 sets of round J-hooks and nuts, two-piece brass armrest, Waverly tailpiece, two-piece walnut neck with light wood center strip and ebony heel cap, adjustable truss-rod, "fiddle" shape peghead, convex-back laminate construction resonator with walnut exterior ply, four sets of resonator attachment hardware, single-ply white binding on fingerboard and resonator edges, decorative wood marquetry on resonator exterior sidewall and rim, and nickel-plated metal hardware.
The instrument is housed in an injection-molded hard-shell case with black ABS plastic exterior and red plush interior lining as well as its contents (Ernie Ball Banjo strings, additional bridge & tailpiece, drum key, etc).
There is some playing wear, very little fret wear, a small ding on the binding just below the armrest and a couple of tiny dings on the back of the neck around the 5th and 6th fret. The nickel-plating shows typical oxidation but otherwise, this banjo is cosmetically and structurally in excellent condition.
Phil Salstrom founded Rockwood Carvers in Oregon, Illinois and then in 1963 founded Salstrom Banjos. The company was sold to Fender in 1969 and the equipment moved to California, ending Salstrom Banjo production.
